As we traveled the United States, we discovered that local conditions determined the nuances in the lifestyles of early pioneers. For example, the settlers on the Great Plains often built sod houses or dugouts, while the settlers of the Rocky Mountains used prodigious local lumber to build log cabins.
So our study of states turned into a study of local resources and pioneer housing, a favorite topic since the Eldest recently finished Laura Ingalls Wilder's The Long Winter. Given the emergent and spontaneous nature of learning while roamschooling, I've found that the best preparation is a pen and paper combined with the audacity to overlook one's own lack of drawing skills just enough to draft a visual model. In the process, we discover what it is we can learn.
